Question How do I put on my pet's harness?

Answer
Once your new harness arrives, you will want to make a basic adjustment before trying it on your pet. (See related article.) The harness will be adjustable in two areas, both around the neck and around the chest. Start by adjusting the chest (girth) strap to the measurement you took before you purchased the harness. If you based your purchase on a 26 inch measurement, adjust the chest/girth strap to be 26 inches. Then take a look at the neck area and adjust it so that it will slide easily over your dog’s head.

Now you’re ready to try it on! Many dogs think this is a GREAT game, so be prepared to have fun and make it pleasant for both your pet and yourself.

There is only one buckle on a harness, and that goes around the chest or girth. Unclip that buckle and slide the solid circular strap over your dog’s head. You will now need to raise your pet’s paw (usually the one on your left as you face the dog) and place it through one side of the chest strap. Then simply reach around your dog, grab the other end of the chest strap and clip it closed.

When you are finished, you should have one solid circle of nylon around the dog’s neck, one small strap between his or her front legs attached to the chest/girth strap, one small strap centered between the dog’s shoulder blades, and the chest/girth strap clipped closed. The metal “D-Ring” or leash clip should be on the top of the harness, nearest to your pet’s tail.

You can make any final adjustments for comfort while your pet is wearing the new harness, then you’re ready for a walk! If your dog is not used to wearing a harness, we recommend that you make the first few trips in the harness as much fun as possible. Dogs learn quickly, so teach them to associate putting on their harness with going for a walk or a ride in the car. It won’t be long at all before your pet will be thrilled to see his or her harness come out!

We sell the traditional “V-Neck” or “Walking” harnesses for use with your BatziBelt. We recommend this style because it will distribute force evenly across your dog’s chest in the event of a sudden stop or accident, and will reduce the risk of injury as much as possible. You may even find that it makes going for a walk a much more pleasant experience for both of you!

There are many styles of harnesses on the market today, including “Step-In” styles and “No Pull” or “Gentle Leaders” types. Your BatziBelt will work with any good quality harness that has a D-Ring leash clip centered in the back. Most “Step-In” harnesses have this feature, but be sure to double check for the leash clip placement if you are considering a “No Pull / Gentle Leader” style.

The “No Pull” harnesses normally have the leash clip centered in front, on the dog’s chest. This works very well to stop your pet from pulling (or dragging) you when walking, but is not recommended for use with a car restraint. If this style of harness has the leash clip in both places, it can be used with your BatziBelt attached to the back leash clip between the dog’s shoulders, nearest the tail.

Remember never to attach a car restraint to your pet’s collar! That would be like wearing your seat belt around your neck, and serious injuries could result. Please email or call us if you have any questions. We’re here to help keep you and your pet as safe as possible when you travel.
